Peter was a coward, plain and simple. He knew Voldemort was gaining strength and he didn’t want to stick around to find out what would happen. So, he bailed on the Order of the Phoenix and threw his lot in with the Death Eaters. But that wasn’t all; he also betrayed James and Lily Potter by revealing their whereabouts to Voldemort, even though they had trusted him as their Secret-Keeper when they cast the Fidelius Charm. Talk about a low blow!
