Wow! In the 19th century, things got a lot easier with the invention of new designs. Before the middle of the century, everyone was familiar with upright, space-saving types that used cloth pressed between two rollers. Then towards the end of the century, commercial steam laundries replaced box mangles with steam-powered ones - how cool is that?
